Meet Maggie Shearer, a remarkable coach whose journey from the corporate world to the realm of athletics has been nothing short of inspiring. With a background spanning over a decade in the Biopharmaceutical industry, Maggie's passion for running and leadership converged, prompting her to embark on a coaching career that marries her two passions. An elite athlete herself, Maggie's pursuit of excellence led her to train for the Olympic trials in the Marathon, an experience that enriched her coaching approach and the insights she shares with her athletes.
Maggie's coaching philosophy revolves around developing individuals into leaders and building a culture of excellence. With every interaction and practice, she provides opportunities for her student-athletes to practice communication skills, leadership, and teamwork. From assigning various responsibilities during warm-ups, drills, and exercises to involving athletes in social media management, Maggie empowers her team members to embrace leadership roles while pursuing their talents and interests.
In her coaching journey, Maggie has achieved remarkable milestones, including leading the cross country and track teams to consecutive WSC Conference victories in 2021-2025. In 2024, the women's cross country team placed 3rd at the SoCal Championship and the men's team took 4th at the 3C2A state meet-a 27 year best! 2025 was a standout season with both the men's and women's cross country teams capturing the Western State Conference titles in the same season, a first time accomplishment for Moorpark College! Her mentorship has also contributed to the development of Cross Country and Track All Americans, Conference Champions and many MC program best Track and XC time performances, showcasing her ability to foster excellence in her athletes. In 2025, athletes Maya Natarajan and Tommy White both won the SoCal XC Championship in the same season - another program first. Further, in 2025 she coached Maya Natarajan, to an undefeated season and a 3C2A XC State Championship title. On the men's side, she coached Tommy White to a 2nd place finish at the 3C2A XC State meet. Both athletes set new Moorpark College state meet course records (17:40 5k) and (19:58 4-mile). In doing so, Shearer was selected as the 2025 WSC Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Assistant Coach of the Year. She was also tabbed as the 2024 WSC XC Women's Assistant Coach of the Year.
Maggie's commitment to building a sense of community extends beyond the track. She actively engages with local coaches, running clubs, and stores to promote Moorpark College Athletics. Encouraging attendance at races by parents and friends and leveraging social media to boost program visibility are key strategies in her pursuit of fostering a strong team community. In 2025, she helped create the first Moorpark Mile Summer Track Series, monthly mile races held at the Moorpark College Track, open to all community members. This initiative showcases her dedication to growing the sport and fostering a local connection with the college.
Beyond her coaching prowess, Maggie is a devoted wife and mother of two sons. Her dedication to her family and her athletes is a testament to her nurturing and supportive nature, creating an environment where growth, leadership, and gratitude flourish under her guidance.
