Hoops Opens Season on Homecoming Weekend
Men’s basketball starts strong with wins
MOORPARK, Calif. (Nov. 2, 2025) – Opening day for men's basketball landed on Homecoming and the Raiders worked their way to a 105-78 victory over LA Valley College on Saturday afternoon as part of a four-team tournament. The Raiders returned to the court on Sunday to take down Los Angeles City 88-66 to start the season undefeated at 2-0.
Josh Castaniero hit a three-pointer for the first basket of the season and when he used a layup to put MC on top 8-7 at the 16:38 mark the home squad would not trail again in the win. Moorpark took a 55-35 lead into the locker room and cruised through the second half to the 27-point. victory.
Sixteen players hit the court and the group combined to shoot 54.5 percent from the field. Moorpark put seven different players in double figures with Eric Kubel and Noah Cotton sharing the team-lead with 13 points apiece. Castaniero and Clyde Seo each scored a dozen and both Dominique Brutus and Aeneas Grullon contributed 11. Markus Steele finished with 10 points, on 5-for-5 shooting, and a team-high six rebounds and a pair of blocks. Castaniero handed out six assists as well.
On Sunday, MC opened a 22-6 lead in the first half and went on to use a 10-point advantage at halftime to take out LAC by 22 points. Moorpark, again, never trailed in the second half. The trio of Kubel, Grullon and Aiden Bitran shared the game-high of 14 points apiece while three other Raiders hit double figures as well. Steele pulled down 10 rebounds, adding a block and a steal. Castaniero paced the pack with five assists, while grabbing four steals and chipping in with 11 points.
Moorpark (2-0, 0-0 WSC) will be off for a week before welcoming Southwestern on Monday, Nov. 10 for a 7:00 p.m. tip-off inside Raider Pavilion.
